Why You Need It
Most people use the same password for most of their accounts. You can get some variation by adding numbers and symbols but you can only remember so many. Other password management systems don't let you in on how they generate the password, so unless you have the password written down or the password generator at hand you're out of luck.
HashWord, inspired by Hashapass, addresses all of those shortcomings.
Hashword simply takes two words, referred to as a parameter and a master key, and combines them together to form a third rather cryptic looking string of 8 characters. You then use those 8 characters as a password. The cool thing about it is that the same parameter and master key always generates the same password. Don't worry though, using the magic of a sophisticated mathematical formula (SHA-1) if someone knows the password and the parameter, figuring out the master key is computationally infeasible. That means if one of your accounts is compromised, the risk of that attacker learning the password to your other sites is quite small, as long as your Master Key is strong. The risk for the average user is most likely quite acceptable.
Unlike most password generators, you don't need to write down or save the passwords HashWord generates. All you need to do is remember your master password and the word used as the parameter. The parameter can be an easy to remember word since you don’t need to worry about its secrecy.
